Female Urinary Incontinence

Female Urinary Incontinence

Women have umpteen reasons to worry about. Puberty, menstrual periods, stomach pain, back ache, pregnancy, child birth and menopause. Oofh! And at every stage women’s body undergoes severe changes leading to weakening of muscles. This causes female urinary incontinence.  This means the bladder is unable to control the urine and it starts leaking. There are various reasons and causes for loss of bladder control. Basically it happens due to weakness of pelvic muscles. Sometimes even psychological problems like depression can cause female urinary incontinence. The involuntary outflow of urine occurs during coughing, sneezing, laughing, while doing exercise or lifting anything heavy.

There are many types of female urinary incontinence. Some of them are stress incontinence, functional incontinence, urge incontinence, overflow incontinence and so on.

Stress incontinence- This happens to women most of the time due to undue stress and tension. This type of female urinary incontinence is curable. There is no need for any medication. A controlled diet, combined with regular pelvic exercises and simple lifestyle changes can help to get rid of urine leak. Smoking, alcohol, caffeine and citrus fruits cause incontinence. Dairy products and tomatoes and spicy foods may also cause incontinence. Identify the foods and drinks that cause bladder irritation and try to avoid them.

Functional incontinence- Dreadful diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s cause functional incontinence leading to many embarrassing moments in life. Before the person can reach the toilet the urine flows involuntarily. Severe cases of bipolar disorder can lead to involuntary urination due to lack of self control. Though the bladder is normal these people don’t have an inclination about it. They wait till the last minute or they are lost in their own ‘thoughts’.

Urge incontinence- This may occur due to overactive bladder. In such cases people visit the toilet at least 8 times in a day and twice at night. Frequent urination occurs due to bladder irritation. Taking medication to control this symptom can help in female urinary incontinence.

Overflow incontinence- As the name signifies the bladder starts leaking and doesn’t stop. In women who are undergoing menopause the pelvic muscles weaken due to loss of estrogen triggering incontinence. Due to female urinary incontinence the dribbling of urine continues and never stops. That is why it is known as overflow incontinence. Diabetic women are prone to female urinary incontinence.

Besides the above mentioned reasons there are also times like pregnancy and child birth when the bladder is pressed often by the growing uterus making the woman run to the toilet. Also while getting up after sitting in a place the leak happens embarrassing women. It is advised to wear adult briefs that will help to soak in the dribble at least in public.

Statistics show that female urinary incontinence occurs in 35% of women who are over the age of 60 years. This is not a disease. It is just that the body has aged and lost its control mechanisms. Most of the time drugs and dietary changes combined with exercise help to get rid of female urinary incontinence. Surgery is the last option for female urinary incontinence.
